A Century of Wines and Spirits
Palmers Brewery has a proud history of importing, supplying and retailing wines and spirits that stretches back well over a century. When John Cleeves Palmer purchased the brewery in 1896, he brought with him extensive experience from Odiham Brewery in Hampshire, which already had a well-established wines and spirits business.
In 1919, Palmers acquired The Wine Shop on South Street, Bridport (now The Book Shop). Together with additional premises on Gundry Lane, these sites became the centre of the company's wine and spirits operations. Wines and spirits from around the world were imported through West Bay Harbour, while Palmers also matured, bottled and distributed whisky, sherry and port from its Bridport facilities. The company's Golden Cap trademark, still associated with its gin and whisky today, was first registered in 1918.
The Palmers Wine Store Today
In 1985, Palmers opened its current Wine Store adjacent to the brewery, where it continues to serve customers today.
As Dorset's longest-established wine merchant, Palmers Wine Store offers an exceptional selection of fine wines, everyday favourites, local wines and spirits, as well as the full range of award-winning Palmers Ales and Dorset Orchards Ciders. The store is particularly renowned for its remarkable collection of vintage ports, including bottles dating back to 1955 that were originally bottled in West Dorset.
