10 years at the Three Horseshoes

Meet Hannah & Jaap, running a pub in Burton Bradstock.

Chatting with Hannah & Jaap

You’ve been at the Three Horseshoes over 10 years now, can you tell me a bit about your background before partnering with Palmers and what made you decide to become a licensee with us?

Jaap and I both worked for Marriott hotels for years, which is where we met. Jaap moved to the UK in 1997, progressing through the company to Head Chef at the Portsmouth Marriott. I worked as Graduate Manager after graduating from Sheffield Hallam University, then progressed through to Front of House Manager at the Heathrow Marriott.

Food and hospitality are all we've ever known, they are something we feel very passionate about and enjoy being a part of. My parents lived down here and spoke about Palmers for many years, taking us to many Palmers pubs for meals when we came to visit. When we decided to make the big move, Palmers was the natural choice. We made contact and the process was very easy, being offered the Three Horseshoes was more than we ever expected.

The pub is very successful, what would you attribute your success to?

“Offering something a little bit different has ensured people return…”

As people that enjoy eating out and experiencing all that Dorset hospitality has to offer, the main thing that stood out for us is that consistency is key. Making a return visit to somewhere you previously enjoyed, to find a totally different experience can be very disappointing, so this is something we really focus on both in the kitchen and front of house.
We’ve also found that offering something a little bit different has ensured people return. Jaap's Dutch heritage and our obsession with Asian food have provided plenty of opportunities to keep things interesting and set us slightly apart from the crowd.

What would you say the benefits are of partnering with a small, family run brewery?

“They go out of their way to ensure we have everything we need…”

Working with Palmers is like working with family. We are lucky enough to have got to know most of the team over the years and everyone is so friendly and helpful. They go out of their way to ensure we have everything we need, they know our aspirations and are always happy to look at ways to improve the pub and help us to meet our goals.

Do you have any advice for aspiring pub landlords?

“You become part of the community and do everything you can to support the locals.”
Running a pub is more than a job, it’s a way of life. You become part of the community and do everything you can to support the locals. You are there for some of the happiest moments a village can experience and some of the hardest and saddest. You are a listening ear, a word of advice or a shoulder to cry on, however, the best bit is what you get back.
A loyal crew of friends who would do anything for you, who shout about your successes and also return the favour of a shoulder when needed. Be prepared for the 24/7 lifestyle, the hard work required to make a successful business and set the standards high for yourselves and your team.

What is your favourite Palmers beer?

Jaap is definitely partial to a pint of Dorset Pale.

Which is your favourite Palmers pub except the Shoes?

We love the Marquis of Lorne. Great food, cosy in the winter and the garden is a family favourite in the summer.
