Origin of Palmers IPA

Palmers IPA is a traditional English IPA first brewed in 1953.

The increase in popularity of American IPAs in the last 20 years can make the term IPA confusing. English IPA or India Pale Ale describes a product that was developed to survive the journey to the East Indies which was possible because of higher levels of hops and alcohol which both act as preservatives. The confusion arises that in the 1950s, “pale” meant the opposite of dark (like a stout), higher alcohol meant more than 4% by volume and “hoppy” was in comparison to the light ales that were barely hopped at all. American IPAs are genuinely pale and use scientifically developed hops and yeast to impart much higher levels of bitterness and sometimes extraordinary levels of alcohol.
